A core difference between intending and preferring is that intending involves a commitment to a specific future action or goal. Preferring on the other hand is a comparative evaluation or desire that ranks one option over others, but doesn't necessarily include the commitment to act.
Why is that important in manifesting the greatest outcome for our clients.
Intention is a proactive, goal-oriented state of mind that involves a deliberate decision and a plan for action. The intention is directed at one's own future actions and implies a commitment to carry it out.
A good example I intend to go to the grocery store today" means a decision has been made, and there is a plan to act on it.
Preference is a desire or a ranking of options, which can exist without a concrete plan or immediate action. You prefer something over something else For example I prefer coffee over tea. It requires at least two choices for comparison. While it's a type of desire that motivates, it doesn't always translate into action if other factors or stronger intentions intervene. You might prefer something but still end up doing something else. It is a judgment about which option is more appealing or desirable, not a commitment to making that choice a reality.
Where can we use this in therapy? When you commit to doing what ever it takes to succeed, you will most likely achieve it even if it is not easy. If you are not believing it 100%, start preferring the outcome until the belief is strong enough.
